Activities
For the adventurous among you there are plenty of activities in the local area.
Canoeing
The Orb valley is a great place to go canoeing. There is a great canoeing centre at Tarasac with friendly staff. It costs around 30 euros for a day in a two man canoe. The centre's website may be found here.
Canal du Midi
Perhaps a little more laid back than canoeing would be to hire a boat and crusie up and down the Canal du Midi for a few days. The Canal du Midi is 240 km long, has 91 locks and is a masterpiece of 17th Century engineering. Belle du Midi Cruises (www.belledumidicruises.com), who are based in Le Somail on the banks of the Canal du Midi, offer full day or half-day boat hire.
Cycling
There are two bikes at the house, both equipped with pannier racks. The cycling in and around the area is excellent for both day trips and longer expeditions. You can take it easy on the Canal du Midi or head out it into the surrounding hills up towards Millau, the grand causes and the Gorge du Tarn. There are also lots of beautiful and cheap camp-sites nearby (about 10 euros a night!).
If you are keen on cyclling then Mellow Velos, based near the Canal du Midi, are a great British run cycling hire service that can rent you bikes and pick and drop you off for day or longer trips. Their website may be found at www.mellowvelos.com. Gerry Patterson's site Cycling Languedoc is a great resounce that sets out many good cycling routes in the region.
Vide Greniers
Keep a look out for signs advertising local 'Vide Greniers', where residents of a village set up stalls outside their houses and sell all kinds of things. Vide Greniers are really good events for picking up bargain antiques and curios (they are usually held on a Sunday!).
